More than thirty MEPs sign a letter denouncing the “unusual level of violence” suffered by indigenous peoples in Colombia

Socialist MEP Iban García del Blanco has sent a letter to the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, to express “his concern about the situation of vulnerability that various indigenous peoples are suffering, given the growing violence inflicted against them by illegal armed actors.”

The letter, which has been signed by another 35 MEPs from different political groups, says that “this violence includes illegal appropriation of land and resources, forced recruitment of children, or rapes and murders perpetrated by the ELN guerrillas and members of the FARC that did not sign the Agreement, or by narco-paramilitary gangs and other illegal armed actors. ”

The letter specifically refers to the Nasa people, from the north of the department of Cauca, whose representatives have warned during a visit to the European Parliament “about the threats that loom over them and other indigenous peoples following the signing of the Peace Agreements.”
