We ask the European Commission to protect SMEs from technology giants

Together with my colleague, MEP Lina Gálvez, I have asked the European Commission to protect small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from technology giants such as Amazon, which decided to pass on the digital tax to companies that use their platform to sell their products.

We have warned that Amazon is increasing the commission fees they charge the companies for their sales in the same proportion as the digital tax. The competition in sales prices on Amazon is so great that companies affected by the increase in the sales commission cannot in turn raise the final price of their product. Therefore, we require the Commission to ensure that the large multinationals will pay the digital tax.

It is important to protect SMEs and freelancers against unfair competition and the abuse of dominant positions of multinationals. A sustainable digital Europe constitutes a vital challenge for the survival of the industrial fabric of SMEs and we have to ensure that the benefits are shared and that the monopoly of multinationals in the digital sector ends.
